The new Honda Accord will be the 10th generation model and it certainly hasn’t rested on its laurels. The 2018 Honda Accord was recently unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show and many exciting new features were unveiled. The highlight for many was the addition of supercharged features, new onboard technology, and a ten-speed automatic transmission. Let’s take a closer look at some of the details.
First impressions:
The Accord now has a faster roofline and the 10th generation looks significantly sportier than previous models. There’s a longer rear overhang, so the newer Accord doesn’t have the fastback-style rear end that we saw on the new Civic sedan. There is a distinctive chrome front grille and matching side curtains. The new Accord is lighter, lower, wider and shorter than the previous model. This gives the car a more pronounced sporty aesthetic, but it will be one of the most spacious offerings in this segment and the cargo volume has increased.
In the cabin:
The new Accord has a new three-tier dash design with soft-touch materials, a sporty steering wheel and paddle shifters. A 7-inch driving display replaces many of the more traditional information displays. There’s also a new 8-inch infotainment system that provides access to connected HondaLink services, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay features. Higher specs also have a 6-inch configurable HUD to display information such as speed, engine RPM, traffic sign recognition, and navigation information. Some other useful features are wireless charging for smartphones, 4G LTE WiFi for cars, near field communication technology, and wireless updates for the system.
Underhood:
Many of the most exciting changes have occurred under the hood of the new Honda Accord. The old V6 engines are gone and are now being replaced by supercharged gasoline engines and a revised gasoline-electric hybrid unit for the new sedan.
The non-hybrid range starts with a 1.5-liter turbo that generates 143 kW of power and 260 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 5,000 rpm. This engine can be combined with a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The next engine is a 2.0-liter turbo that replaces the outgoing 3.5-liter V6. This engine can be combined with a six-speed manual gearbox or a ten-speed automatic. This engine has 188 kW less power than the V6, but thanks to the turbocharger there is more torque from 339 Nm to 370 Nm.
The final engine is the one used in the Honda Accord Hybrid variant. It is a 2.0-liter Atkinson gasoline engine mated to an electric motor. The controls and batteries have been moved under the floor and there is now more cargo space available. There are currently no confirmed dates for the introduction of a Honda Accord.
